Aims

At the end of this course, the student will have learned to conceive, organise and assess educational activities and learning situations for the classes in Latin and Greek in the different degrees of Secondary school. He will have developed management styles adapted to the various audiences and objectives to be met.
In the medium-term, he will have become able to write out scientific and methodological lesson preparations to be taught during a first teacher-training period.

Main themes

By documenting and preparing ourselves, and by studying various classroom sequences, we will try to take into consideration the main aspects of the contemporary teaching of old languages: - the finalities according to the degrees; - the specificity of old languages in general and of each one in particular; - the learning of Latin and Greek: inductive method, authentic or abridged texts, grammar summaries, learning and memorising basic vocabulary, handbooks, ...; - reading authors: choices, the exegesis of the ancient text, translations, the various kinds of annotations, inter-textuality, updating, balance between grammatical and other exploitation, groups of texts, thematic itineraries, falling back on printed translations, ...; - getting familiar with ancient cultures and civilisations: methods, priorities, three-degree planification, ...; - conception and implementation of assessment tools adapted to the various objectives envisaged, not forgetting remediation and differentiated pedagogy, ...; - critical overview of the possibilities offered by multimedia, for documentation as well as for learning purposes, interactivity and pupil autonomy.
30 hours of theoretical classes, accompanied by 15 hours of practical exercises, in groups of 20 students, relating to the issues tackled in the theoretical class, as an illustration and practical implementation of the latter.
The students are required to hand in written papers as well as annotations of readings, accompanied by personal criticism. They are subject to an oral interview. For the practical classes, partial or complete lesson preparations are handed in and discussed; these elements are taken into account for assessment.
As far as possible, the course is spread over two years. The theoretical course and the practical sessions are directly linked to the teacher training period.
