Aims

The main objective of this lecture is to make the student who already has a basic knowledge of classical and/or modern Arabic, to learn basic Middle Arabic, notably through reading of easily legible Christian Arabic manuscripts.

Main themes

This lecture aims at making the student familiar with patristical and literary Middle Arabic texts written by Christians from Near and Middle East. The students should already be familiar with classical and/or modern Arabic before being able to translate and comment on the content of these manuscripts. Some problems of Arabic codicology and critical editions will be mentioned.

Content and teaching methods

This lecture is an introduction to the literature, notably the religious one, of the Christian Arabs. A basic knowledge of Arabic grammar should be acquired before beginning to study these texts which are read, commented and translated into French.

Prerequisite: one year of classical and/or modern Arabic.
Examination on reading in Arabic and translating into French.
Teaching materials : texts on photocopies and/or text processing.
