Aims

By the end of the course, students will have acquired an overview of the different areas of Oriental Studies, enabling them to decide what to specialize in later on in the course.

Main themes

Oriental studies will first be presented as a discipline with its own specific historiography and epistemology, then broken down into the different branches of Oriental history and philology taught in the department and studied in individual lectures.

Content and teaching methods

The course has seven parts: 1. The Epistemology of Oriental Studies; 2. Introduction to Egyptology; 3. Introduction to Syrian-Aegean Anatolian studies; 4. Introduction to Biblical Studies; 5. Introduction to the study of the Byzantine and Christian Orient; Introduction to Islamology; 6. Introduction to Indology.

Course entry requirements : none.
Evaluation: Evaluated and certified by an oral examination with members of the teaching team and an extended essay based on reading relating to one part of the course.
