Aims

By the end of the course, the student should master the procedures necessary to the knowledge and use of sources of information relative to Greco-Roman Antiquity.

Main themes

In this course students will be:
-introduced to documents from the Greco-Roman classical period and to the disciplines which make it possible to make use of them.
-introduced to and taught how to use modern works dealing with classical studies, particularly modern reference works and collections

Content and teaching methods

The course comprises four parts:
1. Presentation of documents from Greco-Roman Antiquity: literary, epigraphical, papyrological, archaeological, and numismatic sources, paying special attention to the methods used in their study and interpretation.
2. Panorama of contemporary works dedicated to the Classics. Explanation of the procedure used in elaborating a question on a subject proper to Antiquity.
3. Effective use of a library in order to find the necessary documentation for the study undertaken.
4. Writing of bibliographical notes that should help the student to describe with precision the works and articles consulted.

Course entry requirements: none.
Course material: students should obtain a copy of the most recent edition of POUCET (Jacques), HANNICK (Jean-Marie), Aux sources de l'antiquité gréco-romaine. Bruxelles, Artel. Documentation will be provided for other parts of the course.
Evaluation : Evaluation certified by an oral examination at the end of the term. Continuous assessment during the year through oral testing and personal work. The end-of-year examination has a written and an oral component.
