Aims
Three skills are required by the end of the course:
1. Description of the contexts, great periods and historical pinnacles of Latin literature;
2. Summary and presentation of important works read and translated beforehand;
3. Acquisition of a clarification, research, and presentation method for referring to Ancient sources of Latin literature, including minor works and authors.
Main themes
Lectures cover several subjects or chapters of Latin literature in the form of syntheses elaborated by the lecturer. These are completed by personal study of notions in Latin history and literature from a textbook, a programme of translated texts to be read at home, and exercises in library research techniques for finding references.
Content and teaching methods
Lectures will centre around presentations on Latin history and literature. The point of these lectures is not to establish a catalogue of works and authors, but to introduce the contexts proper to the history of Latin literature and notions of literary generation, aesthetics, and composition. One presentation will always be devoted to the definition of the material, cultural, and aesthetic conditions of Latin literature. Students are required to do many assignments: summaries of lectures, source research, study of a textbook in Latin literature (to be evaluated).
Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
Prerequisites: none.
Assessment: continuous over the semester (3 tests); final oral exam at the end of the course.
Course Materials: students are asked to acquire a textbook in Latin literature; the precise reference will be given at the beginning of the course.
