Aims

The student should be able to distinguish the different literary movements of the period under study. (S)He should become acquainted with the Dutch-speaking novelists and authors of short novels of this period.

Main themes

Detailed study of a period on the basis of theoretical readings and analysis of Flemish and Dutch novels.

Content and teaching methods

The contents vary; in recent years, the course has taken up literary postmodernism from the seventies until today.

The theoretical readings are prepared by the students at home and are discussed in the classroom. The analysis of the novels are prepared with the teacher and are presented to the class in groups by the students. An essay is required, testifying to the results of the seminar.

PRE-REQUISITES : To have successfully followed the courses on the history of Dutch literature in candidacy (GERM 1136; GERM 1235 and GERM 1236) and to show a strong interest in this area.

ASSESSMENT : Oral presentation, written work and class participation.

SUPPORTING MATERIALS : Coursebook containing the main ideas of the theoretical introductions as well as the names of the authors and the titles of their works.


COURSE HOLDER/COURSE SUPERVISION : Preparation of the analysis in small groups with the teacher.
