Introducing the students to mythopoetics.

Main themes

This lecture aims at introducing the students to mythopoetics through the motif of the labyrinth in some important works of 20th century German literature. Modern man sees in the labyrinth the reflection of his existential situation and the contemporary reader identifies himself preferably with the Minotaurus. In other texts the experience of the labyrinth still has ist therapeutic value: man - confronted with his own truth - succeeds in coming to terms with his totality.

Content and teaching methods

Contents: Study of a mythopoetics

Method: Preparatory reading and research done by the students in order to be able to take part in the analysis of the texts. If possible, the course will be organised as a seminar.

Evaluation : Active participation in the course or seminar (oral presentation, discussions, written essay) is taken into account. Final evaluation based on a written exam (or possibly a personal essay) and oral exam, starting from a personal reading of the texts.


Course supervision: Preparation of the analysis in small groups with the teacher.
