Aims

By the end of the course the student should be able to follow any discourse in Standard Dutch and to read complicated texts in Dutch. He'll be able to take part in spontaneous conversations. He will be able to develop and argument in written Dutch. He will have a metaknowledge of the Dutch language.

Main themes

Integrated development of the four skills: reading, writing , speaking, listening. Analytic discourse exploitation of texts. Vocabulary development and practical aspects of language use (neologisms, foreign influence, spelling) are dealt with as well.

Content and teaching methods

Progressively develop the communicative skills in Dutch. Various types of exercises should foster the receptive and productive skills. Practical aspects of foreign language users' skills, such as the use of dictionaries, the critical attitude toward neologisms and foreign words will also be dealt with. Part of the course is devoted to reading strategies.

Prerequisite: good basic knowledge of spoken and written Dutch
Exam: written part: at the end of the course; oral part: on the basis of team prepared articles in Dutch.
