Aims
To familiarize the students with the principal branches of Dutch linguistics and to make them aware of the working of language. The students should also be able to analyse - with a criticizing mind - reference books.
Main themes
1. Study of the different elements of linguistics in the light of the specific movements for each language.
2. Introduction to the reading of scientific articles.
3. Presentation of reference books.
Content and teaching methods
The course is an introduction to the principal branches of Dutch linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax: first term: phonetics and phonology (vowels, diphthongs, consonants; co-articulation; accentuation and intonation) / second term: morphology (inflection and derivation) and syntax (grammatical categories, syntactic functions, word groups; simple and complex sentences).

Prerequisite : GERM 1133.
Assessment: written and oral exam (+ essay).
Teaching materials : 'syllabus' available from the teacher.
