Aims
Provide a foundation course in English linguistics and train students in the reading and writing of scientific articles
Main themes
The following three linguistic fields are covered:
1. Phonetics and phonology: vowels, diphthongs, consonants; phonemes and allophones; accentuation; intonation
2. Morphology: morphemes and allomorphs; inflection and derivation; word formation processes
3. Syntax: grammatical categories; syntactic and semantic functions; phrases; simple, compound and complex sentences; textual approach (theme-rheme)

Evaluation : Written exam (theory and exercises). Students can choose to write an extended essay in a topic of his choice. The mark obtained for the essay counts towards the overall assessment of the course.
