Aims
Acquisition of the foundations of German linguistics with respect to German phonetics/phonology, German morphology and Germany syntax. The most fundamental empirical generalizations from the three linguistic fields will be discussed and the theoretical instruments for explaining them within modern linguistc theory.
Main themes
Studies of basic concepts of grammatical theory and grammatical description with respect to German phonetics/phonology, morphology and syntax. The studies will be accompanied by exercises in linguistic argumentation.
The students begin to read literature on linguistics (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax); and they begin to develop linguistic analyses and to evaluate linguistic argumentation with respect to phonetics/phonology, morphology, and syntax.
Content and teaching methods
Systematic analysis of aspects of contemporary German grammar.
Phonetics/Phonology: German consonants and German vowels, International phonetic alphabet for German (Transcriptions), phonemes, phonological rules of German, basic concepts of linear and non-linear phonology, rule ordering, syllables.
Morphology: Categories of words, morphemes, morphological processes (derivation, inflection, composition), lexical semantics.
Syntax: Constituent structure, Case in German, subcategorization, agreement, the three positions of the verb in German (verb-first, verb-second, verb-final), sentence structure (within Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar/X-Bar Theory), a generative theory of German sentence structure, the distribution of reflexives and pronouns.

Prerequisite : GERM 1113.
Evaluation : * Partial (written) test in German, optional. The test will be written at the end of the first quadrimester (December).
* General (written) test in German, obligatory. The test will be written in June and September.
