Aims

To learn to draw a thematic map.
To lean to use a mapping software
To learn to use a map as a scientific tool for modelling and for decision making.

Main themes

Introduction to the theory / methods for analysing spatial data and for thematic mapping. Exploratory spatial data analysis.

Content and teaching methods

. Map and geographical analysis. Data acquisition and data types. Graphical elements of the map (title, legend, orientation, colour, direction, raster, etc.). Cartomatic and geographical information systems. Elementary statistics and graphs.

2. Which map for which data ?
- Points, lines and surfaces.
- Nominal, ordinal and cardinal variables
- Symbol maps, Choropleth and choromatic maps. Classification methods.

3. Specific maps : mapping fluxes, cartograms, anamorphoses, 3D mapping, etc.

4. Comparing maps : proposals for solutions

5. Conlusion : advantages and limits of the map.
