Aims
By the end of this course, the students will have understood how science, in the modern sense of the word, originated in Egyptian, Babylonian, and Ancient Greek civilizations, and how in the Medieval period it circulated in the Western, Byzantine, and Islamic worlds.
Main themes
Study of the development of certain sciences (astronomy, arithmetic, geometry, geography, etc.) from their Egyptian, Babylonian, and Greek origins to the end of the Middle Ages, encompassing the different Medieval civilizations (the Western, Byzantine, and Islamic worlds until 1453).
Content and teaching methods
Notions in the history of science (especially astronomy, mathematics, geometry, geography, etc.) from its Babylonian and Egyptian origins till the end of the Middle Ages. The full course is comprised of 45 hours divided over two years (first year: Antiquity, second year: the Middle Ages in the Western, Islamic, and Byzantine civilizations). 2 year course.
