Aims

The course aims to help the students from the three Letters departments to deepen their appreciation of the elementary notions acquired during the first year literary theory course, with the emphasis on literary style. The students are asked to put these notions into practice in the study of difficult contemporary poetic works.

Content and teaching methods

The introduction covers: the evolution of the notion of "style" throughout history; the presentation of the important contemporary schools of style and theoretical perspective. On this basis, we will analyse Marcel Proust's A la Recherche du Temps perdu, with a detailed study of Du côté de chez Swann.
