Aims

The student should be able: 1) to use the available sources in information technology that gather information about literature, language, and history; 2) to gain an appreciation for the ways of thinking implied in the use of computer processing; 3) to use IT procedures within a personal project in the chosen discipline; 4) to be informed about the most recent technological innovations in terms of information processing (optical support, hypertext, networks, telecommunication, the Internet, etc.).

Main themes

Lecture Course: introduction to the systems used (Macintosh and PC computers); first initiation to the problem of information processing: the textual data; the linguistic, literary, and documentary analysis; the structuring in history; elaborating a database for personal use; critical presentation of the applications; abstracts, lists, indexes, concordances; sorting, classifying, attestation calculations; statistics, graphics; databases; critical research of information: bibliographic databases and the Internet.

Tutorial: gathering and processing data; spreadsheets and building databases; using the appropriate software; critical questioning of databases and search engines.

Content and teaching methods

The student should be able: 1) to use the available sources in information technology that gather information about literature, language, and history; 2) to gain an appreciation for the ways of thinking implied in the use of computer processing; 3) to use IT procedures within a personal project in the chosen discipline; 4) to be informed about the most recent technological innovations in terms of information processing (optical support, hypertext, networks, telecommunication, the Internet, etc.).The content and method of the course may be adjustied in terms of the technological changes most useful to data processing in Literature and History.
