This course takes further the examination of the sociological aspects of Criminology studied in the Criminology course. It aims to give students a broad overview of Criminology, to develop their critical and predictive skills and to inform them about the most recent advances in sociological thinking on the issue of criminality.
The course will have three main components: the study of criminality and punishment as a set of social practices of penal ideology and socio-penal mechanisms; the study of the role of socio-penal mechanisms in today's changing societies and the development of various trends in Sociological Criminology. The course will be updated to take account of the most recent publications in the field. The course draws on largely European and Anglo-American literature and updates students on permanent changes in the field of Sociological Criminology. The course teacher will ensure that part of the course is organized in the form of lectures given by a range of Criminology specialists
