Content and teaching methods

Summary : contents and methods

The first part of this course is mainly devoted to the knowledge of crime and the criminalised person. It is divided into several chapters : the 18th century, the birth of the social sciences at the beginning of the 19th century, the development of psychiatry and finally the birth of criminology as a specific science in the time of Lombroso.

The second part is more specifically devoted to the development of theories on penal reaction. The course will deal with the penal theories of the 18th century (called "classical theories") which have been in conflict whit the positivist theories. The course will also tackle the contributions of the first sociologists to criminological thought.
