The aim of this course is to provide an introduction , from an historical perspective, to the major issues under discussion in the field of criminology since this field was created in the Western world. This transdisciplinary introduction, which will cover the contributions of medicine, psychiatry, penal law, sociology, psychology and philosophy, highlights the impact of theoretical, ethical and political questions of the present knowledge on crime and punishment.
This course will comprise a total of 60 hours. As a number of students taking this optional course will only follow for the first part of the course (30 hours) it will be split into two parts.

Content and teaching methods
Summary : contents and methods
The first part of this course is mainly devoted to the knowledge of crime and the criminalised person. It is divided into several chapters : the 18th century, the birth of the social sciences at the beginning of the 19th century, the development of psychiatry and finally the birth of criminology as a specific science in the time of Lombroso.
The second part is more specifically devoted to the development of theories on penal reaction. The course will deal with the penal theories of the 18th century (called "classical theories") which have been in conflict whit the positivist theories. The course will also tackle the contributions of the first sociologists to criminological thought.
