Main themes

This course provides a systematic approach to sociological findings on criminality and deviance.
More precisely, it has the following objectives:
- in terms of knowledge:
- 1) students should be familiar with the rules of causal analysis in quantitative research,
- 2) the rules of causal analysis in qualitative research
-
- in terms of know-how: students should be able :
- 1) to formulate research hypotheses from the theories studied
- 2) to use these theories in the analysis of issues arising from a particular situation.

Content and teaching methods

After an introduction to the rules of causal analysis in quantitative and qualitative research (JP Deslauries and HS Becker), the course presents students with theories of criminality and deviance put forward by E. Burgess, CR Shaw, HD McKay, E. Sutherland, T. Sellin, R.K. Merton, R.A. Cloward, HS. Becker, E. Goffman, H. Garfinkel, relating them to:
1) the context in which they were set out;
2) the theoretical framework they subscribe to;
3) the empirical research from which they were generated or on which they were tested;
4) the applications to which they have given rise.
