Aims

To give students the analytical tools that will enable them to understand the main social and economic issues in Latin America. The course will be based on the logic of various actors at local, national and regional level, and on reading spread over an extended period.

Main themes

Work conducted in parallel with scientific literature on this issue as it has been developed over the last 20 years by social sciences and economic sciences in Latin America.
1) The crisis of debt and social relations.
2) Migration, urbanisation, industrialisation, structural adjustment and a change in the development model.
3) The contribution of the "gender" perspective to an understanding of social identities.
4) Social identities and economic issues in a context of globalisation.

Content and teaching methods

Methodology
A combination of:
- general expositions;
- case-studies (usually based on monographs written in Spanish);
- discussion sessions based on teaching support (e.g. a video, a text read by all, or an outside speaker).
Each stage of the course will be marked by a brief note and a reading list on the subject; these will be distributed at the beginning of the exposition.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Assessment: This will take the form of end-of-course work on one of the themes dealt with on the course, and including a theoretical-conceptual section on the issue of social identities together with an analysis of a case. There will also be an oral defence of the work at the time of the examination.
