Aims
To demonstrate the role of education and training in the differential development of demographic variables (morbidity-mortality, fertility and the migration process).
To carry out a critical analysis and comparison of education indicators between states, and to learn how to reproduce the dynamic of an education population.
Main themes
- The education population (a particular case in demography).
- Definitions and the content of education indicators.
- A comparison of these indicators at international level (e.g. OECD and UNDP).
- An introduction to the construction of an education matrix (e.g. transition matrix time spent doubling up, the average duration of education, and the effectiveness of the education system).
- Analysis of the flow-stock.
- A longitudinal analysis of cohorts of pupils according to how much progress they have made in the educational programme (pupils making average progress, those ahead of the field, and those falling behind).
- Differential education (e.g. gender and social background).
Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
Assessment: This will be in the form of summarised reading and applied work.
Pre-requirement: A demographic analysis, and an introduction to matrix calculus.
