Aims
To provide an overview of the development and current situation of mortality and health in countries of the north and the south, and to present information and measurement tools.
Main themes
- Concepts and definitions (mortality and quality of life).
- Information systems available in the fields of mortality by cause and morbidity; relationships between morbidity and mortality by cause; comparability in time and space; the choice and relevance of indicators of mortality by cause, morbidity and health; and life expectancy in health and scales of quality of life.
- The epidemiological transition; the growth of causes of mortality in time and current spatial differences; rectangularisation of the survival curve and compression of mortality; longevity, mortality, and health in old age; and differential morbidity and mortality.
Content and teaching methods
A lecture course complemented by individual reading and work in groups.

Assessment: This will be in the form of summarised reading and applied work.
Pre-requirement: A basic understanding of demography.
