Aims

To give students an overview of different kinds of household and family in the north and south by linking them to their economic, social and environmental context.

Main themes

- The three aims of the demography of households.
- The anthropology of the family and of parenthood (e.g. an overview in time and space of different kinds of union, families, households and systems of inheritance).
- Elements of methodology: sources of data (in brief); the construction of reality and the construction of typologies (e.g. households and unions), indicators (e.g. same-sex relationships), analytical models, and models of micro- and macro-simulation.
- Conclusion: links between the family and society, including those in settings undergoing change.

Content and teaching methods

Lecture course.

Assessment: this will be in the form of a synthesis of reading and applied work.
