Aims
1. Providing students with a 'professional' analysis of newspapers.
2. Enabling students to use newspapers as a pedagogical instrument.
3. Encouraging students to have a better understanding of how press narrative functions.
4. Enables students to discover a corpus of journalist writers.
Main themes
To discover the numerous facets and realities of the Belgian and international press and
of journalism. The course offers a critical panorama of the press, addresses its historical
dimension, and highlights its emblematic function. It also opens up an anthropological
interpretation, and builds bridges between literature and journalism.
Content and teaching methods
Content
1. In depth analysis of the history and reality of the Belgian daily press.
2. Comparative presentation of some important forms of press abroad.
3. Analysis of some particular press narratives: local narrative, sensationalist narrative, short news items narrative, and event-based narrative.
4. Analysis of about 10 literary works that breathe new life into the journalistic approach to event-based narrative.
5. Presentation of some fictional works that deal with the relationship between journalism and society.
