Aims

Students will acquire knowledge on the evolution of urban development from the 10th to the 20th century. They will learn how to analyse and identify an urban morphology and its constitutive parts.

Main themes

Presentation of the important historical phases of Western urban development: Middle Ages, Renaissance, Modernity, 19th century, 20th century, by type and by country or group of countries, according to its constitutive parts (plans - volumes - public spaces, etc.).

Content and teaching methods

Illustrated lectures.
Four parts:
- Medieval life
- the Modern city
- the industrial city
- the Contemporary city
with synthetic presentations: Florence for the Medieval city and Louvain-la-Neuve for the industrial city, for example.
