Aims

At the end of the course, the student
- will dispose of the iconographic source tools for the course ;
- will be able to interpret the iconic language in various Ancient contexts ;
- will be able to identify images of power and appreciate their force in Antiquity.

Main themes

- To examine the methods of iconology, as independent science of the interpretation of the image ;
- To analyse the image in its different aspects : creation and creation methods, iconographic repertoires and contexts, functions and programmes, circulation, borrowings and reception.
- To define the genesis, the values and the mutations of artistic themes through the works of Antiquity, from Prehistory till the Roman era.

Content and teaching methods

Content
- Ways of creating images : transformation of the scheme into a theme by iconic units.
- Ways of reading the images : identification of iconic unities, versatility, borrowing, and historical sociology.
- The triple identity of images : autonomous, independent, variable.
- Developed application of the methods of iconology on the representation of power in Antiquity and the impact on various societies.

Method
Lectures illustrated by significant examples from different Ancient artistic cultures studied by the department of archaeology and art history.
