Aims
To introduce the students to the research and analysis methods of popular, extra-European, and 20th century music.
Main themes
Besides information of a historical and theoretical nature, the course makes use of numerous recordings (ethnomusicology) and the analysis of music scores (20th century music).
Content and teaching methods
1. History and introduction to the research methods of ethnomusicology. Applications to Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak folk songs. 2. After having studied the sources of music of the 20th century in the works of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, the course proposes a survey of the principal personalities and trends of contemporary music (Arnold Schönberg, Béla Bartok, Igor Stravinsky, Edgar Varèse, Henry Cowell, etc.) and the analysis of some representative music scores.

Presentation of a typed assignment on a topic related to the course's subject.
Music scores and recordings from the MUSI unit of the Royal Albert I Library and personal recordings.
