Aims

At the end of the course, the student :
- will have a global overview of the archaeology of the regions of North-Western Europe for the periods taken into account.
- will understand the specific issues of Gallo-Roman and Medieval archaeology;
- will be able to conduct a critical approach to today's research in national archaeology.

Main themes

The course is spread over two years. The first year is dedicated to Gallo-Roman archaeology, the second year to the archaeology of the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods.
The course comprehends a general part (30 hrs) and applications (15 hrs).
The general course deals with a series of general themes.
The applications constitute exceptional and more detailed approaches of the themes presented during the theoretical lectures.

Content and teaching methods

The theoretical lectures dedicated to Gallo-Roman archaeology tackle the problem of Romanisation. The major themes related to this phenomenon will be pointed out one by one : geopolitical frame, the Augustinian period, road network, urbanism, small agglomerations, rural world, funeral habits, art and techniques, the Later Empire.
The lectures dedicated to the archaeology of the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods tackle the funeral habits during the Merovingian period, the Christian topography of cities, church, rural settlements, the archaeology of banks, the archaeology of landscapes, fortifications, terracotta. During the applications (15 h.), the students will be exposed to the study of archaeological material or more concrete approaches. During the summer some field work internships will be set up; these can contribute to a more direct approach to national archaeology.
