Aims
At the end of the course, the student will have met the proto-historic cultures of Northern Europe and the North-West of Europe, with more particular attention paid to Belgium and its neighbouring countries.
A transversal approach will also be taken: this will be a critical study of the main themes of the current research related to the Proto-historic era.
Main themes
- To describe the essential features of proto-historic cultures and the forthcoming archaeological material.
- To critically analyse the current research themes in this era.
- To link the approaches by multidisciplinary processes as they exist today in this field.
Content and teaching methods
The course offers a general overview of the Proto-historic era in Europe, especially in the North Western part of the continent. The cultures of the Bronze Age and the Iron Age will be presented, especially in the territory of Belgium or its neighbouring countries. Some specific themes will also be presented, such as landscape and the environment, proto-historic habitat, fortifications, sanctuaries, funeral archaeology, and/or archaeological material. The second part of the course will go further into detail on some of the themes described in the theoretical part.
Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
The assessment will be written and may also take into account a personal assignment for the second part of the course.
Detailed plan and essential illustrations.
