Aims

By the end of the course, students should be able to use a range of different methodologies to analyze a selection of key works of Oriental Art, from the Middle Ages to the modern period, in the fields of Architecture, painting and sculpture. They should also be capable of synthesizing these analyses with a view to acquiring a good understanding of the way in which forms and themes have developed throughout history.

Main themes

The methodology is primarily based on case studies illustrated with images projected during lectures. The works will be presented in chronological and/or thematic order, with particular emphasis laid on stylistic and iconographic transformations in each typological field. The types of analysis will vary in order to show the range and complementarity of scientific approaches. The basic material given to students will be an interactive CD-Rom, based on the course, which will contain the images and identifications of the works shown during lectures, as well as complementary study material, including most notably a number of reference texts.

Content and teaching methods

Case studies will be used to give students an understanding of the chronology and thematic development of forms and themes in Western Art, from the Middle Ages to the modern period, taking in major works from the fields of archeology, painting, and sculpture.
