Aims

By the end of the course, students will be familiar both with the terminology employed in the fields of Archeology, Art History and Musicology and with the methods and principles of heuristics, bibliographic references, observing, describing and analyzing documents relating to Archeology and works of art. In addition, they will have been taught how to write, illustrate and present a piece of scientific work.

Main themes

Students are expected to : acquire a command of the everyday and technical vocabulary used in Archeology, Art History and Musicology; adopt a heuristic approach and draw up a bibliography on a given subject; acquire the basic principles of bibliographic references and abbreviations; get an overview of the methodology employed in the study of archeological objects and works of art; be able to describe an archeological object or a work of art.

Content and teaching methods

Terminology used in archeology and art history; guide to the bibliographical sources (archive and literary sources etc) and working tools (encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, manuals, monographs, collections, journals, museum and exhibition catalogues etc); systems of bibliographic references and abbreviations; methodologies for analyzing archeological objects and works of art: identification, technology, state of conservation, iconography, style, etc.
