Aims

Information on the periods under study. Students are taught to recognize styles and their succession, the foreign influences they have been submitted to, and to retrace links to the historical facts that have been influential.

Main themes

The Art History and Mediterranean Archaeology course is divided into two parts :
- the first part treats the pre-historical, proto-historical and archaic period ;
- the second part treats the Hellenic and Roman periods.
The course considers the Western and the Eastern areas of the Mediterranean.
It intends to characterize every stylistic trend, period by period, and to point out the influences and the historical facts that underlie this evolution.

Content and teaching methods

Introduction to the archaeology and art of the great Mediterranean civilizations, outlining a general historical summary of their different forms (dwellings, architecture, sculpture, pottery, decorative arts) from their appearance in the Neolithic Age till the fall of the West Roman Empire. The first part focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Asia Minor) and Greek civilization, the second on the Western Mediterranean (Italy, Spain, Malta, etc.) and Roman civilization.
