Aims

Introduction and familiarization of students with the language and the main themes of the philosophical and aesthetic approach to an art work in order to provide easy access to philosophical texts in this area and to encourage students to consult them.

Main themes

Explanations of the major concepts of philosophical and aesthetic reflection such as they appear and evolve through the history of this reflection (art, beauty, form, etc.). Comments on excerpts of classical texts, annotated illustrations and synthetic reports.

Content and teaching methods

The course is an introduction to the philosophical and aesthetic approach to an art work. The access to theoretical texts about art should be made easier and this kind of enquiry should be learned and integrated into the apprehension and discussion of an art work. Lectures on theories in aesthetics and philosophy of art from different eras will be illustrated and completed by a confrontation of concepts and studied theses on art works from different eras.
