Aims

The aim of this course is to provide students with: a basic grounding in the history of the techniques used in Art History and Archeology (historiography): a general methodology for approaching textual, archive, literary and monumental sources and a method for observing, analyzing and describing objects, from the raw material stage to the process of production, passing through the initial phases of creation.

Main themes

The objects examined during the course will be archeological objects and Plastic Art works made out of the most commonly-used materials from Antiquity to the XXth century (e.g.stone, clay, metal, wood and glass). Students will investigate the physical properties of the raw materials and the various stages of the creative process, from initial conception to completion. The order in which these objects will be examined will vary with teaching objectives.

Content and teaching methods

Students will learn how to identify the materials and the physical signs of the initial phase of the creative cycle and the tools used and thus gain an understanding of the main processes behind the creation of Plastic Artwork.
