Aims
At the end of the course, students will be able to carry out the scientific study of archaeological and art history documents. They will also be prepared for a final paper.
Main themes
- extension of the knowledge of terms and systems of bibliographical reference in archaeology and art history (continuation of the first year course ARKE 1140).
- extension of the methodology of scientific research on an archaeological object or an art work with a wider range of research tools (initiation in first year course ARKE 1140).
- definition of the successive stages in the elaboration of a final paper.
- privileging of a confrontation with the art work or objects in their materiality.
- introduction of the student to the activities and accomplishments of the professional world.
Content and teaching methods
General methodology of analysis of an art work or archaeological object : heuristics, criteria,writing, illustration, and presentation.
Specific methodology centered amongst others on auxiliary sciences, internal critique, external critique, the question of authenticity, chronology, historical contexts and typology of archaeological and artistic documents.
Preparation for the elaboration of the master's thesis.
Seminars on scientific research on objects, art works, typological categories, or iconographical themes.
Practice of observation and critique through direct contact with art works.
Visits to art galleries, exhibitions, excavation sites and monuments.

Prerequisite : initiation provided in first year course ARKE 1140.
Assessment :. Correction and assessment of seminar exercises, , practical assignments, and vocabulary tests. These will count for half the grade in the final examination.
Reference Materials : Course book. Portfolio of reproductions of documents shown with model texts of scientific research. Objects and art works available in different art galleries or forthcoming from archaeological excavations.
