Mathematical modeling and optimization of viral particle amplification in mammalian cell cultures
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and Laurent Dewasme
The goal is to develop mathematical models of viral particles amplification in mammalian cell cultures. These mathematical models will possibly be the basis for further optimization of growth and infection protocols.

AFONSO FERNANDES Sofia (Starting date : March 2013)
Mathematical modeling and optimization of mammalian cell cultures in perfused bioreactors
Promoters : A. Vande Wouwer and M. Jolicoeur (U Montreal)
Modelling of animal cell culture is performed through a) metabolic flux analysis and metabolic network reduction, b) macroscopic dynamic modeling.

ALMEIDA Pedro (Starting date : January 2010)
Modeling and control of aquaculture processes
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and Anne-Lise Hantson
The objective of this work is to develop mathematical models of an aquaculture plant, in which the water is recirculated and treated using specific biofilters, to optimize the plant operation in terms of water quality, energy consumption and productivity, and to design an appropriate monitoring and control strategy.

ARAUJO PIMENTEL Guilherme
Dynamic modeling and control of membrane bioreactors (MBR)
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and Alain Rapaport (INRA Montpellier)
The main objective of this work is to develop simple dynamic models of membrane bioreactors, with validation on a pilot plant, and to design control strategies

BENAVIDES CASTRO Micaela
Modeling and state estimation of micro-algae cultures
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and Jan Van Impe (KUL)
This work is dedicated to the estimation of state variables in micro-algae cultures, with exploration of robust estimation techniques. This work includes an important experimental part with model validation and test of state estimation techniques.

DUVINAGE Matthieu (Starting date : September 2009)
Development of a lower limb prosthesis driven by a neural command
Promoter : Thierry Dutoit
The main goal of this work is to develop an original brain-machine interface in order to drive a lower limb prosthesis by thought. In particular, the research work will focus on the establishment of a mathematical relationship between the electroencephalographic signals produced by the brain of a walking human and the movement of his legs.

GIOVANNINI CAMPOS Giannina (Starting date : March 2013)
Mathematical modeling and control of the anaerobic digestion process
Promoters : A. Vande Wouwer and G. Ruiz (PUCV, Chile)
Optimizing control of the anaerobic digestion process is developed based on simplified 2 or 3 steps dynamic models, and information from a few measurable variables only.

GRIMARD Jonathan (Starting date : October 2013)
Modelling and control of hot-melt extrusion process
Promoters : A. Vande Wouwer and L. Dewasme
This research is dedicated to pharmaceuticals production using hot-melt extrusion. Mathematical modeling and optimization of the process using information such as Raman/NIR spectroscopy is considered.

OVIEDO SANTANA Julian
Development and Implementation of Software Sensors for Water Treatment Processes
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and Alejandro Vargas Casillas
Given the lack in fast measuring devices for fed-batch SBR bioreactors treating wastewater, we used dissolved oxygen measurements as input variable for a super-twisting observer to help recreate those variables (of interest) that cannot be easily measured, namely Oxygen Uptake Rate (OUR).

RETAMAL Cristina (Starting date: January 2010)
Modeling and control of cultures of genetically manipulated bacteria strains
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and A-L Hantson
Genetic manipulations of bacteria strains allows the production and the sensitivity to acetate to be reduced, thus enhancing the growth potentiality. Through experimental studies, this work aims at modeling the cell metabolism and at optimizing their culture conditions in bioreactors.

SARAIVA Ines (Starting date : January 2009)
State estimation and control of hybridoma cultures operated in perfusion mode
Promoter : Alain Vande Wouwer
This work is dedicated to the design of software sensors and optimizing control strategies for the production of monoclonal antibodies in cultures of hybridoma operated in perfusion mode. This study is supported by extensive experimental tests and industrial validation.

SUVAROV Paul
Control of simulated moving bed chromatographic separation processes (SMB)
Promoters : Alain Vande Wouwer and Achim Kienle (Max Planck Institute, Magdeburg, Germany)
This work is dedicated to adaptive control of SMB processes, with the study of different plant/sensor configurations and the experimental validation with a pilot plant.
