Message of the Coordinators

In the beginning of this new academic year, we’d like to wish a warm welcome to all new members of our network. We hope that they will find the DYSCO network an inspiring environment to develop and expand their research interests. The activities mentioned in this newsletter show that there are indeed plenty of opportunities for this.

An important activity, which we would like to draw your attention to, is the next DYSCO Study day. It will be organized by the VUB team and will take place at the Royal Academy in Brussels on November 22nd. The program of this day can be found here : DYSCO Study Day.

Most members of the network will remember our colleague Jan Willems as one of the scientific world authorities in our field. Jan has brought so much to so many of us. He has been a constant source of inspiration, energy and enthusiasm for the community and was a strong and active supporter of DYSCO. His untimely death on August 31 means a tremendous loss not only for our network, but also to the systems and control community as a whole. We will miss his lively comments and his valuable interactions during our different activities. We suggest you visit the memorial website at http://janwillems-memoriam.net

Finally, a note about our future organisation in DYSCO. The DYSCO coordinator Vincent Blondel has been elected dean of Engineering at UCL as of September 1, 2013. It has therefore been decided, in agreement with all DYSCO promoters, that starting from this year, Paul Van Dooren will help with the management of the DYSCO network and will take responsability for most of the scientific leadership. It is a pleasure having Paul take, once more, an important role in our network.

PhD Defenses and Back to the Roots Symposium

The ‘Back to the Roots Symposium’ aims at presenting the research work of prof. Bart De Moor, and his PhD students Philippe Dreesen and Kim Batselier, among others, on finding the roots of sets of multivariate polynomials, to a wide academic community, including fellow students, postdoctoral researchers, and academic staff from universities in Flanders and Belgium.

The focus of this symposium is on the interplay between polynomial algebra, linear algebra and systems theory and thus pervading a wide range of (mathematical) engineering disciplines.

The PhD defenses which are part of this symposium will be held in the same auditorium at precisely 14:00 (Kim Batselier) and 17:00 (Philippe Dreesen).

Two members of the jury prof. Johan Schoukens (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium) and prof. Bernard Hanzon (University College Cork, Ireland) will give invited lectures.
During this symposium several occasions will be offered to ‘Meet the jury members’.
