International workshop ROKS-2013, July 8-10, 2013, Leuven

International workshop on advances in Regularization, Optimization, Kernel methods and Support vector machines: theory and applications

Scope

One area of high impact both in theory and applications is kernel methods and support vector machines. Optimization problems, learning and representations of models are key ingredients in these methods. On the other hand considerable progress has also been made on regularization of parametric models, including methods for compressed sensing and sparsity, where convex optimization plays a prominent role. The aim of ROKS-2013 is to provide a multi-disciplinary forum where researchers of different communities can meet, to find new synergies along these areas, both at the level of theory and applications.

The scope includes but is not limited to:

  • Regularization: L2, L1, Lp, lasso, group lasso, elastic net, spectral regularization, nuclear norm, others
  • Support vector machines, least squares support vector machines, kernel methods, gaussian processes and graphical models
  • Lagrange duality, Fenchel duality, estimation in Hilbert spaces, reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, Banach spaces, operator splitting
  • Optimization formulations, optimization algorithms
  • Supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised learning, inductive and transductive learning
  • Multi-task learning, multiple kernel learning, choice of kernel functions, manifold learning
  • Prior knowledge incorporation
  • Approximation theory, learning theory, statistics
  • Matrix and tensor completion, learning with tensors
  • Feature selection, structure detection, regularization paths, model selection
  • Sparsity and interpretability
  • On-line learning and optimization
  • Applications in machine learning, computational intelligence, pattern analysis, system identification, signal processing, networks, datamining, others
  • Software

Call for abstracts

The ROKS-2013 program will feature invited plenary talks, oral sessions and poster sessions. Interested participants are cordially invited to submit an extended abstract (max. 2 pages) for their contribution. After the workshop a number of selected contributions will be invited for an edited book.

1-week course in Belgrade on delays, nonlinear control, and PDEs - 12 to 16 March, 2013

This course will be given by Prof. Miroslav KRSTIC (University of California, San Diego, USA).

Abstract

In the 1990s, the recursive backstepping design enabled the creation of adaptive and robust control algorithms for nonlinear systems with nonlinearities of unlimited growth and with uncertainties that are not matched by control. Taking the backstepping recursion to the continuous limit provides a design methodology for boundary control of PDEs and for some key classes of delay systems. Contrary to standard PDE control that mimics LQR for finite-dimensional systems and yields virtually intractable operator Riccati equations, backstepping feedback laws come with explicit gain formulas. This course, mostly based on the instructor’s book Boundary Control of PDEs: A Course on Backstepping Designs (SIAM, 2008), teaches how to derive such formulas for specific classes of PDE systems. The explicit feedback laws allow the design of previously inconceivable parameter-adaptive controllers for PDE and delay systems. Backstepping also yields the first systematic method for control of large classes of nonlinear PDEs and for nonlinear systems with long delays.

BELSPO Back to Belgium Grants

Submissions for Back to Belgium Grants are now open.

Return grants of the Belgian Federal Science Policy were first initiated to promote and ease the reintegration, in Belgium, of Belgian researchers working in a foreign country in order to valorise their expertise gained abroad and to develop the national R&D potential. The grants are now open to Belgian as well as to foreign researchers. Nevertheless, foreign citizens must have a specific relationship with Belgium. To be eligible, they must have spent at least 3 years in Belgium for R&D and/or higher education purposes. For both categories, the minimal duration of the post-doctoral stay abroad is 2 years (either inside or outside the EU).

Given for 24 months on a full-year full-time basis, the Return grants concern the fields of exact, applied and social sciences. The grants are assigned to researchers with a university degree (doctor or equivalent), with a postdoc experience abroad of minimum 2 years.

The submitted research projects have to be executed in Belgian research units. These are among others labs or units in universities, Federal Scientific Institutions or research centres connected to the IAP's (Interuniversity Attraction Poles) or to the national research programmes implemented by the Belgian Federal Authority.

Apart from the monthly allowance, the grant includes a travelling allowance (1,250 EUR) and a bench fee of 12,500 EUR per year (to be allocated by the researcher into the host institution).

Please refer to the web page on Back to Belgium grants for more detailed information. There, you will find the information note, a FAQ and a check-list. All these documents are aimed at helping the applicants to fill this form.

The candidates will send the official application form to the Belgian Science Policy. The applications will be introduced by the researchers together with the host institution.

For the 2013 selection, the foreclosure date is Thursday 28 February 2013, before 16:00.
