Master in Biblical Studies [120.0]

AnnéesTravail de fin d'étude

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

The Master in Biblical Studies provides in-depth training in exegesis and biblical languages (Old and New Testaments). This programme is unmatched in the world of Francophone universities. For this reason, it is likely to attract students from abroad, in particular due to the expertise it offers in narrative analysis. A particularly positive aspect of the course concerns the active involvement of the faculty in RRENAB (réseau international de recherche en analyse narrative des textes bibliques). Foreign students are often attracted to the idea of specialising in the reception of seminal texts (ancient times and Renaissance) and in contemporary hermaneutics.
Through activities geared towards examining methods and broadening skills, the research focus helps the student acquire the necessary skills when it comes to research in the field of biblical studies. For its part, the teaching focus provides teacher training. In the various areas of 'sciences bibliques' (Bible science) – languages (additional modules in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek), Biblical history and culture, exegesis methods, reading and hermeneutics of the texts of both Testaments - the student is invited to address specific issues and also learns how to take a rigorous approach to his work, how to master specialist exegesis instruments and develop a critical mind.

This Master can complete the Master in Theology, provided it is combined with 1 extra year of study.

Retour en début de pageGeneral presentation of the programme

The core courses in the programme (90 credits) must include a dissertation, biblical language courses (Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) given by the Institut orientaliste de la Faculté de philosophie et lettres, biblical exegesis activities in both Testaments (including two seminars) and general activities. Moreover, the student selects one of the two focuses on offer (research or teaching) for a total of 30 credits. The teaching focus is the same to that offered in the master en théologie.

Whatever the focus or the options chosen, the programme of this master shall total 120 credits, spread over two years of studies, each of 60 credits.

Teaching Method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

Students learn most about the specific methodology of Biblical exegesis and ancient languages in seminars and activities where active participation is required and where the student can practice what he has learnt in practical exercises which are subject to formative evaluation. It is also in this context that the student learns how to link, via the detailed analysis of texts, a variety of disciplines: philology, literature, the history and culture of the Biblical world, hermaneutics. Incidentally, in the main lecture activities, the syllabi promote a combination of teaching and research.
The syllabi of the various activities foresee a variety of teaching methods, depending on the way languages and exegesis methods are being learnt. The fact that, in the analytical activities, specific issues are envisaged promotes a variety of approaches per theme involving different types of knowledge and skills.
Seminars are the best place to vary the learning approach : independent study (at the library and with the help of the tools provided by new technology), group work and debates, coaching by the teacher. Moreover, the low number of students means the latter have ample opportunity to interact with the teacher in his lecture hall, where study situations can be altered depending on the short or medium-term objective in the activity.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

The modes of evaluation are outlined in the syllabus for each activity. For seminars, formative evaluation is foreseen in the syllabus. Evaluation is mainly carried out in the form of a classic oral or written exam and written work with formative evaluation.
Courses in Biblical languages to be followed for two years (Biblical Hebrew and Greek) will be subject to one evaluation at the end of the two years ; the evaluation will take into account the philological skills acquired by the student. In the first year, course participation will be validated where it has been active.

Internationalisation
For UCL students studying Études bibliques, Erasmus exchanges are encouraged. Incidentally, the faculty is in the course of developing international contacts to promote special partnerships at its graduate college; in the medium term.

Any student who so wishes may, with the consent of the person in charge of the programme, replace the activities in his programme with equivalent activities which feature in the Master programme offered by KULeuven (Faculteit Godgeleerdheid). The total number of optional courses followed in Leuven must not exceed 20 credits. Once he has exceeded this number of credits, the student is invited to enroll in the exchange programme which features in the agreement between the two faculties.
