Master in Ancient Languages and Literatures: Classics [60.0]

AnnéesTravail de fin d'étude

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

The core courses in this master provide advanced training in Greek and Latin philosophy, particularly in linguistics (theoretical study and practical mastery of both classical languages) and an explanation of authors (text commentary based on philological criticism, studying sources and truly literary analysis). Skills acquired will be put to work in the end-of-study work.

One choice of options allows the student to specialise more in the fields of Greek language and civilisation (20 credits: literature, history and archeology of the Greek world) or Latin language and civilisation (20 credits: 'littérature, histoire et archéologie du monde romain').

At the end of the 60-credit master, the student will have acquired sound training in classical languages and literature, boosted by more thoroughgoing knowledge of cultures and societies where Greek and Latin were employed, from ancient times and the Middle Ages until modern times.

Teaching method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

The majority of the courses in this programme implement an interactive style of teaching methodology, inspired by the principles of the project 'gérer sa formation' or 'manage your training' (guaranteeing student autonomy with the aid of new types of ICT, e-learning, teaching teams, practicing oral and written communication, etc). The programme familiarises the student with new resources and methods in the field of ancient science. The options programme foresees training in other disciplines, such as history and archeology.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

The written and oral exams aim both to measure skills acquired as well as the student's communication skills and know-how. — Some subjects, geared towards helping the student develop skills in research and personal criticism, are subject to presentations and discussions spread out over the year (permanent evaluation).

Courses are evaluated according to current university regulations (see General Examination Regulations). Students may find further information on specific evaluation methods in the course descriptions.

Internationalisation
No Erasmus exchange is planned for the master 60.
Courses in Greek or Latin language and literature can be borrowed from the programme of KULeuven, in line with the UCL-KULeuven agreement.
