Teaching method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

Features intended to favour interdisciplinarity :

The program offered by UCL in electromechanics is of its nature interdisciplinary since it combines training in the fields of electricity, mechanics, automation and computer science. It is also open to non-technical disciplines (eg, economics, management, languages) through optional courses.

Variety of teaching methods

By means of a teaching method which favours projects integrating various subjects, the program develops in students critical thinking enabling them to design, model, implement and experimentally validate electromechanical devices and systems.

The final thesis represents half the work load in the final year and offers students the possibility to be involved in a research team or to collaborate with industry in order to go into a subject in more depth. In terms of its size and the context in which the research is carried out, it forms a real initiation into the professional world of the engineer or the researcher.

Diversity of learning situations

The students will be exposed to various suitable learning situations: lectures, projects, exercise sessions, problem-solving situations, case studies, experimental laboratories, computer simulations, learning programs, visits to building sites and factories, study trips, group work, individual work, seminars (lectures given by visiting scientists) etc. For certain material, e-learning will enable the students to learn by themselves at their own rhythm and to carry out virtual experiments.

This variety of situations enables the students to build up their knowledge in an iterative and  gradual way, developing their autonomy, their sense of organisation, their management of time, their capacity to communicate in various ways. The latest IT resources (material, programs) are available for the students in their work.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

The learning activities are evaluated according to the procedures of the University (see the examination regulations), viz. written and oral examinations, laboratory examinations, personal or group work, public presentation of projects, and a thesis defence.
