Teaching method

Features intended to favour interdisciplinarity :

The Master of Biological Engineering is of its nature interdisciplinary since it is situated at the interface between engineering and the biomedical sciences. It is a versatile basis providing students with an initiation into the wider fields of application of biomedical engineering and a certain number of options in other disciplines.

Variety of teaching methods

The teaching method used in the Master program in Biomedical Engineering continues that used in the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering: active learning, a balanced mix of group and individual work, a major place devoted to acquiring skills and knowhow in architecture.

A major feature of the program is the involvement of the students in the research groups of the teachers (in teaching sessions, case studies, projects and theses) which initiates the students into the subject matter and methods of the discipline concerned, and enables them to learn by questioning.

The thesis represents half of the workload of the final year, it offers the possibility to go more deeply into a certain area and, by its extent and the context in which it takes place, is an excellent preparation for the real work of being an engineer or a researcher.

Diversity of learning situations

The learning takes place in a variety of different ways such as placements, case studies, courses, projects, or confrontation with cutting edge research. This variety of situations will allow students to build up their knowledge in an iterative and gradual way.

The option Setting up businesses follows an interactive approach and is oriented to problem-based learning. Throughout the program, students are required to do group work in pluridisciplinary teams. The thesis is intended to be interdisciplinary to allow groups of three students , ideally from different faculties, to work on a project of setting up a business.

The learning activities are evaluated according to the procedures of the University (see the examination regulations), viz. written and oral examinations, laboratory examinations, personal or group work, public presentation of projects, and a thesis defence.
