The options in the Bachelor programme: minors, deepening of knowledge, optional courses

OPTIONS

At UCL, the Bachelor degree is generally made up of a “major” (150 credits), which provides the training corresponding to the title of the degree, and an option (30 credits) that offer an initiation to another “minor” discipline, or a deepening of the “major”, or a choice from a list of courses. The options programme is spread over the second and the third year of the Bachelor programme.

MINORS

At UCL, a minor is a complementary "option " that the student may choose, depending on their programme, as from the second year of studies, from among the minors offered by his faculty or by other faculties. It comprises 30 credits, spread over the second and third years of the bachelor programme. It enables the student to widen his horizons of knowledge or to discover another subject. Besides enriching the student's polyvalence and opening up his mind, the minor may also serve as a factor of reorientation when choosing a master's programme.

DEEPENING OF CHOSEN DOMAIN

At UCL, deepening is an option that the student may choose as a complement to his major, depending on his programme. The option “deepening” is worth 30 credits, spread over the second and the third year of the bachelor programme it is an alternative to the minor and allows to take courses that are considered as complementary to those proposed in the major. This option offers to the student an occasion to broaden his knowledge in direct connexion with his main field of study (major), but it is not a specialisation or a prerequisite to the access to the master.

CHOICE COURSES

In a number of programmes, the student has the possibility to complete his major (150 credits) with choice courses (30 credits). The more often, a list of choice courses is proposed to the student. The person in charge of the programme must validate the student’s choices.
