Content
In 2023-2024, the course will focus on Latin texts of various genres (prose and poetry) depicting everyday life in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (in particular family life, school life and relationships within the Republic of Letters). The texts will be read and studied in their original language, using a variety of media (reproductions of manuscripts and old printed works, recent editions). Through this corpus, the course will address various questions such as the literary representation of lived experience and contemporary society, the issues involved in choosing Latin as the language of expression, and the adaptation of the classical system of genres and the ancient Latin lexicon to new thematic fields.
Teaching methods
Latin texts will be read, translated and commented on during the course. Students may be asked to prepare some translations at home before the lecture.
Evaluation methods
Written exam (review of the material covered in the course and analysis of a new document).
