The objective of this course is to introduce students to the qualitative research process, focusing on the steps that follow the construction of a problem statement and the formulation of a research question: the steps of designing a qualitative research project, the collection and analysis of qualitative data. The aim is to train students in the epistemological and methodological principles of qualitative research, the main strategies for collecting and analyzing qualitative data, and the main issues related to the validation of qualitative material. This teaching unit consists in offering students an overview of the different qualitative research methods as well as the opportunity to experiment with one of them: the semi-structured interview.
Teaching methods
The course is organized in 5 lecture sessions and 3 practical sessions (guidance and feedback sessions), structured around a few key themes. The course sessions are based on lectures and interactive moments (exercises, discussions) organized in such a way that the students mobilize and appropriate the concepts and tools presented in the course. Theoretical lectures alternate with practical exercises throughout the course. This practical application allows students to use the methodologies, to learn how to design a qualitative study, to conduct interviews, to code data and to ensure a theoretical reflection. The practical sessions are designed to allow students to verify their understanding of the methodological principles and tools presented during the course sessions and to advance in the development of the work that will serve as the basis for the evaluation.
Evaluation methods
- The evaluation consists of the following three parts: A) Individual work (1/3 of the final grade) based on personal and methodological reflection on the research process that has been conducted; B) Group work (1/3 of the final grade) based on a qualitative research approach conducted in subgroups; and C) A written exam (1/3 of the final grade).
- The final grade will be composed of three integrated parts, meaning that all three parts must be successfully completed to obtain a grade equal to or higher than 10/20. Success in these three parts is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge defined in the learning outcomes of the course. A failing grade in any of the three parts results in an overall failing grade for the entire course. Specifically, if all three parts have been passed or if all three parts fail, the final grade, out of 20, will be the sum of the points obtained in all three parts. However, if two parts have been passed and one part fails, the student will receive the grade corresponding to the failed part, which "absorbs" the grades of the other parts. If one part has been passedl and the others fail, the student will receive the sum of the points corresponding to the failed parts, which "absorb" the grade of the successful part. For a grade lower than 10/20, the final grade will be rounded down to the nearest whole number (e.g., 9.8/20 becomes 9/20).
- The same rules apply in both the first and second sessions. The grade for the part that was successfully completed in January will be considered as achieved and retained. Therefore, only the failed part will need to undergo a new evaluation.
- The use of generative Artificial Intelligence tools (e.g., Chat GPT, etc.) is forbidden for all productions (e.g., assignments, documents to be completed, etc.) required of students as part of this course.
