At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
On completing the Unit ‘Translation into A', students should be able to demonstrate their ability to: translate an unfamilar text (press article) into Italian applying the theory taught and avoiding lexical or syntactic calque; translate an unfamiliar text into correct French (in terms of grammar and vocabulary) drawing on the whole palette of options in their native language; transfer the message in French in line with the author's intentions, including in relation to the style and register of the original and avoiding calque errors; weigh up the appropriateness of possible equivalences, be duly circumspect and select the most appropriate option; use appropriate translation techniques in order to resolve any difficulties inherent in a source text and be aware of the nature and challenges of the translation process; check the meaning of words through intelligent use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. | |
Content
Italian-French translation exercises exploiting press articles and publishing-oriented texts (including comparison with the published translations).
Teaching methods
Text analysis and guided ‘Italian into French' translation exercises; groundwork lectures to set out the qualitative and stylistic requirements that students should aim for; students prepare translations individually before class and share their work with the group in class under the guidance of and with (linguistic and stylistic) comments from the tutor.
Evaluation methods
Module 1 : continuous assessment and written exam.
