1 | At the end of this course, the students should: - Know the main raw materials from natural origin to give the best advice and the right information to patients - Know the main types of natural active molecules, their chemical, physical and pharmacological properties - Know the principles and the handling of analytical techniques used to determine the quality of plant drugs The course also explains: - The uses of medicines from plants, interactions and side effects |
Content
- Generalities on uses, advantages and drawbacks of phytotherapy, differences with homeopathy, risks of plant uses
- Phytochemistry:
- Biosynthesis, physico-chemical and pharmacological properties of the main classes of natural active compounds,
- Quality control of plant and plant extracts, particular analytical methods and resolution of problems (case studies) -
- Practical part: Chemical analysis of a drug according to the European Pharmacopea

Evaluation methods
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated for the theoretic part by a written exam (evaluating memory but also logical and critical thinking as well as integration of data) comprising a practical problem
A continuous evaluation will be organised for the practical part, on the basis of a report wrtitten by the students and a wrtitten test
the theoretical part will count for 17/20 and the practical one for 3/20. Students who succeeded the practical part but who did not obtain enough points in the theoretical part, could be exemplted of the practical part but the note will not be reported for the next year.
