An examination of various models: universality or professionalisation, insurance-assistance, individualisation-household, funding, and management. - A comparative analysis of the macro-economic and macro-social elements of systems: public finances, deduc-tions and re-distribution, consumption, and populations covered. - A comparative analysis of methods of financing and management, and of the revenue and expenditure of typi-cal systems. - A comparative analysis of the main policies and mechanisms of social protection: replace income and guaran-tees in respect of health, old age, family and disability.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	- To help students understand the various models of social protection. - To help them understand the key elements of 'typical' models of social protection in Europe. - To help them identify, and make a comparative analysis of, the main differences between these models, and their specific effects.

Content

The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the comparative analysis of contemporary social protection systems. To this end, the course will address the following topics:
- Comparative analysis of social protection systems in the 'North': Historical overview of the emergence of European social protection models and systems, and presentation of the main characteristics of these models and systems; role played by the European integration; Esping-Andersen’s typology; the feminist critique: gendering social protection analysis; and the migration-welfare nexus.
- Comparative analysis of social protection systems in the 'South': Contextualisation, presentation of key typologies, and case studies focusing on South America
- Globalized contemporary issues: transnational social protection; climate change and social justice

Teaching methods

Teaching face to face and/or by distance learning depending on the evolution of health conditions. The class is given in English, and relies on the active participation of students (for instance, through readings and discussions during the class). The teacher will use powerpoint presentations and impose compulsory readings.

This course forms part of a study programme that takes place in the evenings and on Saturday mornings.
Students will have access to a PDF version of the powerpoint presentations.

Students must registed to the Moodle of the course. They will have access to a series of resources, including a PDF version of the powerpoint presentations, and a portfolio of compulsory readings.
