Content
This Course, consisting of three Workshops, aims at introducing the students to specialized translation from Russian into French of texts related to the fields of law, economics, technology and/or science.
- Specialized translation – Legal matters : introduction consisting of a contrastive study of legal fields and contract law in Russian and French, Russian-French translation of the contracts most commonly used in the translator’s practice (contracts of sale, lease, insurance, etc.)
- Specialized translation – Economic matters : Russian-French translation of texts of a general nature treating economic matters, commercial correspondence.
- Specialized translation – Technical and scientific matters : contrastive study of the specialized technical and scientific language in Russian and French, Russian-French translation of technical or scientific popularization texts.
Teaching methods
Lectures and training sessions. Lectures on translation of specialised discourse. Practical exercises of translation that must be done according to instructions given by the teacher.
In-situ training in specialized translation in the working conditions of a professional translator’s workstation ; preliminary work via the e-learning platform (if need be).
Using machine translation software during a translation exercise or exam is strictly forbidden. Such software may only be used as a starting point for a post-editing exercise given by the teacher.
The student’s presence is requested at all in-situ training sessions of the translation workshops. In case of an unjustified and repeated absence at the training sessions, the student may be sanctioned, according to article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the teachers being allowed to propose to the jury to oppose the registration for the January or September sessions of a student who has not attended at least 80% of the courses.

Evaluation methods
- Over the course of the term the term: formative assessment and/or partly summative assessment of the student's work.
- January and August/September sessions: written examination.
In case of an unjustified absence in one of the three parts of the examination, students will have to take all three translation workshops during the August/September exam session.
The overall evaluation may also cover specific parts of the student’s work accomplished during the workshop (for more details, please refer to the terms and specifications of each of the three workshops). If so, in the event of non-delivery of the work within the required time, the student may be sanctioned, according to article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the teachers being allowed to propose to the jury to oppose the registration for the January or September sessions of a student.
The final grade will consist of three integrated parts of equal importance. Each specialized translation workshop being worth one third of the final evaluation of the training unit, the overall mark will be calculated by averaging the three marks.
A pass (i.e. 10/20 or more) in at least two of the three parts is required to demonstrate the skills and knowledge laid out in the learning outcomes of the course.
A failing grade (i.e. less than 10/20) in two parts of the course will result in a failing grade for the whole course. If the final mark is less than 10/20, the failed parts will have to be taken again during the August/September exam session.
Students who have failed the course when the academic year ends will have to take all three translation workshops (economic, legal, scientific/technical) the following year.
