Main themes
This course aims to give the students analytical tools to understand the main social and economic issues in Latin America, taking in account the actors' logic, at local, national and international level and in a long-term perspective.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 - Ability to understand the main social and economic challenges in Latin America. - Ability to put into question generally accepted ideas on social identities in Latin America and making the students aware of the socio-cultural heterogeneousness of this sub-continent.
 
Content
First, we address chronologically social and economic issues of Latin American countries (social and economic organizations of the colonies, extraction of raw materials, neoliberalism, development policies etc.). Afterwards, we analyze current socio-economic issues.
The course will contemplate Latin American countries in general, with a special focus on the Andean region (Peru, Bolivia).
Teaching methods
The course will contain lectures and guest lectures. The students have also to read selected papers and to analyse critically a movie.
All information will be available on Moodle.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation will be an oral exam on the lectures and the compulsory papers. We will also discuss a critical note on a movie about socio-economical issue in Latin-American countries.
In case of a second exam, the teacher decides on an appropriate examination procedure. All the information will be available on Moodle.
