AA-FS-AIE. Develop expertise and a high level of competence in specialized translation in the field of international relations under different headings (diplomacy, geopolitics, geostrategy, etc.) incorporating elements specific to this sphere: adapt to text-type (treaties and agreements, speeches, reports, monographs, etc.) and to the particular requirements of the client (national and international organisations and institutions, NGO's, diplomatic services, research institutes, etc.).  
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit
On completing this unit the student is able to:
  • Identify and employ documentation (in both French and Spanish) which is relevant and useful in dealing with a given source text (comprehension, translation, accurate reformulation); 
Identify terminological and phraseological units in the Spanish text and select equivalents in French with reference  to suitable
  • sources;
  • Identify the genre, typology and nature of the source text with a view to adopting the appropriate discursive means in French to encompass all aspects of the translation process (register, style, codes, rules of protocol, etc.);
  • Translate a text pertaining to the domain of international relations in a professional manner respecting the particular  specifications involved and observing the translator's deontological code;
  • Adapt to a client's specific requirements in a given translation context (complete text, summary translation, rewriting, post-editing, etc.);
Translate a text pertaining to the domain of international relations employing documentary and terminological research and using the most appropriate computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools.
 
Content
The Specialised Translation Seminar in International Affairs will focus on the management of a translation project from Spanish into English pertaining to the domain of international affairs. With the lecturer's guidance, the student will manage the different stages of the translation process from the translation request to delivery. The source text(s) in the field of international affairs will be translated with the assistance, where appropriate, of computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools (SDL Studio©, MultiTrans© and/or Sketch Engine©).

Continuous assessment of the student's work for certification.
The use of machine translation is strictly forbidden.
In September: assessment in the form of a written paper and oral exam. Practical details of the assignment and written exam will be communicated on Moodle.
